Neil Armstrong ~ A Biographical Essay By Brendan Wood, 8.2 Birth and Early Life: Neil Armstrong, my notable, was born on August the 5th, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, U.S.A. He was born on his grandparents farm in Auglaize Country. His parents were Stephen and Viola Armstrong. He had a brother, Dean, and a sister, June. His father was an auditor for the state Ohio and as a result Neil lived in a few different communities. Some of them included Jefferson, Warren, Ravenna, St.Marys, Upper Sandusky and finally Wapakoneta. His interest in flying and the like began when his father took him to the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. His intense interest was elevated when he went for his first plane ride aged six. He had flying lessons at the age of fifteen, and during this time he worked in town and at the airport so that he could pay for these. At the age of sixteen he became a licensed pilot, before he was licensed to drive on the road! One year later he was a naval air cadet. He held this position for 4 years until 1952 when he became a test pilot. Education and preparations for eminence Neil graduated from the high school in Wapakoneta in 1947. He received a scholarship for the U.S Navy. He then started his studies at Purdue University. In 1949 Neil was called to duty by the U.S Navy where he became a navy pilot. The following year he was sent to Korea. In Korea he flew 78 combat missions. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier. In 1955, Neil got a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue. He then received a Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California. His experience also included the flying of over 200 different models of aircraft. These included jets, rockets and some helicopters. In 1962 Neil was accepted by NASA as an astronaut. Neil was one of nine astronauts to be chosen. He then moved to El Lago, Texas, U.S.A to begin his training. Relationships, opportunities for travel As for relationships, there are none spoken of in the resources I have searched through. However, during his life, Neil had many opportunities for travel. He was constantly moving around the state of Ohio in America as a child in 1949 he traveled to Korea for the war. When he was older he moved to Texas for astronaut training. Of course, later in life he would make the monumental interplanetary trip to the Moon. Adult life and major achievments On March the 16th, 1966, Neil flew his first space mission, as command pilot of the Gemini 8. The aim of the mission was to perform the first space docking. Neil successfully docked the Gemini 8 with an Agena craft that was already in orbit. After the two crafts were docked, they both began to pitch and roll wildly. Amongst all this chaos, Neil was unable to undock from the Agena craft and was forced to make an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean. On the 16th of July, 1969, Neil, along with Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin departed for the monumental trip to the Moon. Neil was the commander of the Apollo 11 and successfully landed in Tranquillity Bay on the Moon on the 20th of July, 1969 at 10:56:42pm EDT. As Neil stepped on to the surface of the moon, he spoke these now famous words: Thats one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind. Neil was so excited and amazed when he stepped on to the Moon that he left the word a out. Neil and Aldrin spent two and a half hours on the Moon collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs. The crew returned to Earth on July the 24th, 1969, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean before being picked up by an airplane. The crew had a ticker tape parade held in their honor in New York. Neil received the Medal of Freedom, which is the highest medal a United States Civilian can receive. Neil also received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, 17 medals from other countries and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Reactions to life, work in the contemporary society When Neil returned to Earth, he was obviously a celebrity. He was one of only two people in the entire world that walked on the moon. (Michael Collins had to stay on-board to monitor Edwin and Neil, and to look after the spacecraft.) Before the mission he was an average American, but at the conclusion of it he was very unique indeed. He was honoured by so many countries and people that his life became one that was in the public eye. Whilst completing this assignment, I noticed that it was difficult to obtain information about Neils early life but easy to get information, pictures and even movies about his later life. This further demonstrates my thought that before his monumental trip to the moon he was just any old person in America. The Price Of Fame With Neils trip to the Moon came fame whether he liked it or not. Upon returning to Earth, and even before he left, he was a celebrity. Not only within America, but also out of it. Almost anyone you approach on the street would be able to tell you what Neil said when he set foot on the Moon for the first time, representing all mankind. Thats one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind. This quotation is famous throughout the world and so is the person that spoke it Neil Armstrong. As for a price that he has paid for this fame, I have not found one. He seems happy to give his time generously to all that welcome it and no one has ever heard him complaining. The difference the notable made in the world/country/life/medicine Neil has made quite a difference in the world today. You could say he set the ball rolling for space exploration, as we know it today. Previously our exploration was limited to placing satellites and machines in space but now we are able to launch humans out of our atmosphere and into space where they can live. The Russian space station MIR is an example of this. Also, with advances in technology, things such as Moon rocks can be used to obtain a greater understanding of the geology of Earth. Other theories and techniques used in space can also be applied to researching into diseases and other areas. Neil has also provided inspiration for people from all corners of the globe. His courage and leadership has been recognised by many countries in the way of medals and congratulations. Reason for eminence today Neil is eminent today because he was the first person to set foot on the Moon. If one were to visit the Moon today they would still see the footprints of the first person on the Moon Neil. That fact will never change. However advanced our space exploration becomes, Neil will always be the first person ever. He was seen as a good person by the general public and is still respected today for what he did for his county, his world his kind, and how he went about it. I also believe he is still eminent today because of his spiritual self and not only his physical achievements. He decided what he wanted to do with his life at an early age and lived out his dreams of flying. In fact, he exceeded them. I think we can all take a leaf out of Neils book in that respect. Today Neil shares his exceptional experience with others in the way of lecturing at many universities both in and out of the United States Of America. He is very generous with his time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
